Teeth are protected by multiple layers. These are defensive layers that help your teeth to manage their everyday functions. If you suffer from tooth sensitivity then it means these protective layers may be damaged.

Tooth sensitivity is a condition that leads to more complications if it is not treated properly. It is a sharp and piercing pain that goes deep down to nerve endings. If you experience any kind of pain in your teeth while you eat or drink something, we recommend getting professional help at the earliest.

Reasons for Tooth Sensitivity

Some major reasons for tooth sensitivity include tooth decay, tooth grinding, damaged tooth enamel, consumption of highly acidic, hot, or cold food and beverages. Using a hard toothbrush or even some dental treatments including filling and crowning can wear down the enamel.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

  • Make sure that you thoroughly clean all parts of your teeth after eating.
  • You should avoid all kinds of acidic food and drinks. You can include fiber-rich fruits, vegetables, milk, plain yogurt in your diet which help fight the acid and bacteria in your mouth.
  • Don’t clean your mouth too hard with your hands or brush. Use a soft-bristled brush and follow side-to-side brushing which keeps the enamel strong.
  • Consult your dentist instead of using home remedies when suffering from severe tooth pain. You can use salt water to rinse your mouth for slight relief.
  • You should tell the doctor if your gum appears to be receding.
  • Mouthwash contains acids. So do not use mouthwash for extra time or extra quantity.
  • Don’t smoke as it can lead to gum diseases. Gum diseases result in your gums pulling away from your teeth and uncovering your tooth roots which lead to more sensitivity.
  • You need to take special care after any kind of treatment on your teeth. For a permanent solution to the sensitivity problem, you must visit the dentist regularly.

Sensitive Teeth Symptoms

Sometimes symptoms are mild and go unnoticed. Common teeth sensitivity symptoms are :

  • Sudden pain in your teeth while you eat or drink something cold or hot
  • Pain in jaws and teeth while chewing something
  • Severe pain during brushing or flossing
  • Sensitivity to temperature variations
  • Discomfort to acidic, sweet foods and drinks
