Parents always want the best for their children. It is critical to pay attention not just to the child's food habits but also to their dental hygiene. Remember, for healthy adult teeth, we need to start at an early age.

Parents' Impact on a Child’s Dental Visit

Children are anxious about meeting new people and visiting new places. They tend to look up to family members to cope with these. A calm parent at the dentist would encourage children to cope at the dental office.

Share stories and educational videos on dental visits with toddlers. It gives them a feel of what to expect at the dentist. Pediatric dentists are specialized in dealing with and responding to children.

Your Child’s First Visit to the Dentist

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends visiting a pediatric dentist by the child’s first birthday. The first visit lays the foundation for a good oral health journey.

To prepare your child for a dental visit, explain what dentists do and what to expect. Make sure your child is comfortable before the dental visit.

What to Expect at the Dentist

Depending on the age of the child, the visit will include an examination of teeth, gums, and oral development. Our pediatric dentist would explain topics such as fluoride treatment, teething, how to brush, and speech development.

Signs of tooth decay and cavities can be determined during the dental visit. Earlier detection of tooth decay can prevent tooth loss. The earlier you visit a pediatric dentist the better the child’s experience.

Tips for Dental Care at Home

Before baby teeth appear, clean gums using a damp cloth. Start with a small brush with soft bristles. Use pea-sized fluoridated toothpaste for children above the age of 3.

Thumb-sucking can cause tooth misalignment. At a young age, try to convince your toddler to stop sucking his or her thumb. It is recommended to limit sugary items for children. Plaque is formed when sugar mixes with bacteria in the mouth causing tooth decay or cavities. Children are often at high risk of tooth decay.

Encourage your child to use a straw when consuming sweetened juices or beverages. Straws help to reduce the impact on tooth enamel.
