Being a first-time parent is both exciting and challenging. It is essential not only to take care of the baby’s diet but also their oral hygiene. Remember, a healthy baby tooth will lead to a healthy adult tooth.

What Is Pediatric Dentistry?

Pediatric dentistry is a specialty of dentistry that addresses the oral health needs of infants, children, and adolescents. It is also responsible for young children with special needs.

When Should You Visit a Pediatric Dentist?

According to the American Dental Association, it is recommended to consult with a pediatric dentist when the baby’s first tooth appears. This should be no later than the child’s first birthday. Like adults, children should also visit dentists every 6 months.

During your first visit, your pediatric dental would help you with:

  • Performing a cavity risk assessment for your child’s teeth
  • Guidance on how to avoid tooth decay caused by baby bottle tooth decay
  • Tips on how to prevent tooth cavities, the importance of fluoride water, and a balanced diet in children

Look Out for Tooth Related Issues

In case you find tooth decay or bleeding gums, make sure to meet the dentist much earlier. Parents of infants should be aware that a lack of appetite, aversion to brushing their teeth, or tooth discoloration could be signs of dental problems.

Tips on Children’s Tooth Care

  • Reduce sugary food items: Tooth decay is common in children. Limit food items that harm teeth and result in tooth decay.
  • Help children with brushing: Up to the age of 6 or 7 assist children with brushing. Join them and brush your teeth as well to encourage them.
  • Use fluoride: Many states in the US provide fluoridated water. There is fluoride toothpaste for children too. Fluoride is a natural mineral that helps to protect teeth against cavities. This also helps to strengthen the following permanent teeth.

Seek Dental Guidance Early

Pediatric dentists play an important part in your child’s health. It is important to visit a pediatric dentist regarding your child’s teeth. Similarly, each parent must instill the importance of maintaining good oral health in their child from an early stage. The health of baby teeth will determine the health of permanent teeth and gums too.
