Teeth whitening is a cosmetic procedure that is performed to remove the stain and discoloration on the teeth. The process helps to brighten your teeth and provide you with an attractive smile. At Covington Signature Dentistry, our dentist advises teeth whitening to patients who want to have vibrant teeth in one dental appointment.
Several factors cause tooth discoloration. Smoking and other similar lifestyle choices can lead to stained teeth. Ingredients like tar and nicotine can leave tough stains on the teeth. Genetic factors and poor eating habits can also cause yellow teeth. Patients who have an excessive intake of fluoride can also have tooth discoloration.
There are two major types of whitening procedures: in-office teeth whitening and customized teeth whitening trays.
In-Office Teeth Whitening
If you opt for in-office teeth whitening at Covington Signature Dentistry, our dentist will start by cleaning your teeth. A cheek retractor will then be placed inside your mouth on the gums to protect it from the whitening gel. Then, a generous layer of whitening gel that contains hydrogen peroxide is applied on the surface of the teeth and left for 15 minutes.
The dentist will also flash a curing light on the teeth to activate the bleaching agent in the gel. The dentist then repeats the procedure to attain the desired result from the treatment. The mouth is rinsed and wiped to remove any remaining gel.
Customized Teeth Whitening Trays
This is a procedure that you can perform at home. The dentist first provides you with a custom-made teeth whitening tray that fits on your teeth. This tray is personalized for each patient according to their unique dental measurements.
The beaching solution is also provided to you along with the instructions for using them. It can be applied on the tray and placed on the teeth to attain the desired results.
